The village of Almyrida is a former fishermen’s village on the shores just outside Souda Bay.
Lots of Venetian- and some Turkish architecture
It is situated 22km east of the city of Chania and some 40km west of the city of Rethimnon. Both cities offering well worth seeing old towns with lots of Venetian- and some Turkish architecture left. Almyrida lays at a small bay surrounded by rock formations to the left and right, with the island Karga just opposite the village.
The area is thinly populated, the sandy beaches are a couple of hundred meters long. It is great relaxing in the cafes and taverns directly next to the water…
The impressive White Mountains
The views are great. To the West is the plateau mountain Cape Drapanos, behind us to the south are the impressive White Mountains and over the water we can see all the way over to the peninsula Akrotiri.
The infrastructure is also good. Bus connection to Chania, via Kalives. Almyrida further has three small supermarkets, a couple of cash machines, two car rentals, two bakeries. Enough of everything yet not too much…
